Course Details

The aim of the programme is to develop employees at a Junior Chef level with the skills and knowledge in basic principles of kitchen work, health and safety, and communication in the hospitality sector.

Graduates will be prepared for employment as chefs in junior positions producing basic dishes in a professional kitchen.  The programme will provide graduates the opportunity to establish standards of profession practice for basic cookery in a range of hospitality environments, for example, hotels, restaurants, cafes, healthcare/ retirement villages, to name a few. 

The New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3) is intended for people with none to limited prior experience in hospitality but who wish to acquire knowledge and understanding of kitchen production of this sector.

Course Duration

 

  • This is a self-paced home study course that can be completed in a time frame that suits you.
  • You can work through the material as fast as you like, but a maximum of 18 months is given to complete this programme.
  • This programme has an average expected duration of 17 weeks
  • This programme has a minimum average of 20 hours for industry practical
  • Course material is completed online via our Learner Management System, Canvas.
  • Our Learner Management System can be accessed via multiple devices : desktop, tablet & mobile

On completion of the Level 3 Cookery programme, you could gain employment as a trainee (Commis Chef) and be eligable to enrol in the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery Culinary Arts (Level 4) City and Guilds Diploma in Culinary Arts or City and Guilds Diploma in Baking and Patisserie.

The New Zealand Certificate in Cookery (Level 3) is a full time, 17 week, 60 NZQF credit programme. The programme includes 4 courses, all of which are compulsory and has a maximum of 18 months to complete. Students who successfully compete this programme will then have the option to continue onto the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery Culinary Arts (Level 4)

If you feel that you have gained sufficient experience through time worked in the industry or have a relevant prior qualification, you might be eligible for Credit Recognition and Transfer (CRT)  or an Assessment of Prior Learning (RPL). Talk to us about applying for an assessment.

  • Full Payment of  $ 5000, or
  • Monthly Payments :  $ 2500 Deposit followed by 4 Monthly Payments of $ 625 per month, or
  • Weekly Payments :  $2500 Deposit followed by 16 Weekly Payments of $ 160 per week

International Students 

  • Full Payment of  $ 8000, or
  • Monthly Payments :  $ 4000 Deposit followed by 4 Monthly Payments of $ 1000 per month, or
  • Weekly Payments :  $ 4000 Deposit followed by 16 Weekly Payments of $ 250 per week

What are the Minimum Enrolment Requirements?
  • Domestic students must be 17 years or older
  • International students must be 18 years or older
  • If English is not your first language, you will be required to provide evidence of your English Language skills. This is an IELTS result of a General or Academic score of 5.5. For more information please visit ielts.org
What Other Additional Costs are There?

You need to prepare for the following additional costs, depending on your programme:

  • Ingredients used for practicing all recipes at home or at the workplace
  • Chef uniform and safety shoes for practicals
