The Micro Credential ‘How to Develop and Launch a Food Product Prototype’ is one module of the Level 5 Programme of Study and will lead the achievement of 14 credits. This New Zealand micro credential is available to everyone worldwide.
The aim of this course is to develop the student’s business skill related to developing and launching a food product, which includes researching food trends, markets, and competitors; developing and costing recipes, prototypes and final products; designing labels and packaging; promoting the product to the market; and launching and selling a food product. This skill is essential when progressing into supervisory roles within the hospitality and catering industry or as an owner of a food business.
Students will study the course online, in their own home or work environment and in their own time.
The course will be offered to Domestic and International Students.
The students must have English language competence to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Applicants for whom English is a second language require IELTS (Academic) level 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0.
Students must have the required technology to study online, take videos and photographs of work that they have completed.
There are two final assessments that the student will complete, the one, a theory assessment that is submitted online and assessor marked and the other an online, system marked, assessment.

Course Details
There are 5 topics in the micro credential course. This micro credential is course 8 of the New Zealand Diploma in Cookery (Advanced) (Level 5) for which International Culinary Studio has programme approval.
The course includes:
Topic 1: Food product development, ideas, and market research.
Topic 2: Developing prototypes.
Topic 3: Testing your product.
Topic 4: Market readiness.
Topic 5: Taking your product to market and assessment.
Outcomes:
This micro credential allows domestic and offshore graduates to:
- Manage operating procedures and compliance requirements for operational roles in a commercial kitchen.
- Plan and produce a broad range of dishes employing advanced preparation, cookery, and presentation techniques.
- Plan, develop and design advanced dishes and menus suitable for implementation in a commercial hospitality environment.

Total length: 4 weeks.

Online Studies
The studies you will complete from your own home, via our Learner Management System. Our Key Benefits will ensure you stay motivated whilst studying with International Culinary Studio. Once registered, your Student Experience will be accessible and your learning material available on any pc, portable or mobile smart device (Technology Programme Requirements). Students must have the required technology to study online, take videos and photographs of work that they have completed. The student will also be required to have their own food thermometer to test the temperature of food. Our Chef Instructors will be available and will guide you through your programme to successful course completion. All assignments will be assessed by our qualified Assessors. There are two final assessments that the student will complete, the one, a theory assessment that is submitted online and assessor marked and the other an online, system marked, assessment.
What are the Minimum Enrolment Requirements?
- You must be 18 years or older
- Must have the ability to read, write and speak English (The students must have English language competence to undertake this programme, which is taught and assessed in English. Applicants for whom English is a second language require IELTS (Academic) level 5.5 with no band lower than 5.0)
- Students must have the required technology to study online, take videos and photographs of work that they have completed. The student will also be required to have their own food thermometer to test the temperature of food.
